The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda at Jamnagar along with the National Institute of Ayurveda at Jaipur was highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their pioneering role in higher education, research, and skill development linked to Ayurveda. The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda at Jamnagar was designated as an Institute of National Importance by the Prime Minister on the occasion of Ayurveda Day. The Jaipur-based National Institute of Ayurveda was also classified as a deemed university by Prime Minister Modi.
The WHO (World Health Organization) is also setting up the WHO Global Centre on Traditional Medicine in India itself for enhancing research linked to traditional medicine. This was confirmed by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus through his video message. The new center will be backing the WHO’s efforts for implementation of the traditional medicine blueprint according to him while backing global nations in coming up with action strategies and policies for enhancing the role played by traditional medicine.
At the ceremony on 13th November, the Prime Minister commemorated Ayurveda Day on the birth anniversary of Dhanwantri, revered widely as a God for traditional medicine in India. The potential role played by Ayurveda in managing the COVID-19 pandemic was the key focus this year along with the modernization of current AYUSH education. The newly classified institutions will also have autonomy for upgrading Ayurveda education standards while framing new courses based on emerging global and domestic demand and also spurring research for the generation of more evidence. Prime Minister Modi also stated that exports had gone up for Ayurvedic products by a whopping 45% for September 2020. This indicated huge growth in comparison to the same period last year according to him. He also highlighted how exports had considerably gone up for spices such as ginger and turmeric which are regarded as major boosters for immunity. He highlighted the sudden increase in confidence regarding Ayurvedic solutions and spices from India throughout the world, shown by the growth in exports. He also welcomed the decision of the WHO to set up its traditional medicine center in India, expressing hope for the nation’s future leadership in Ayurvedic research and discoveries.
