To meet the surge in Covid-19 cases, there is an urgent need to recruit medical staff workers. Punjab CM, Captain Amarinder Singh, has ordered urgent recruitment of staff nurses and technicians. This will help to strengthen the state's health capabilities.

On Friday, he ordered 400 nurses and 140 technicians recruitment for government medical colleges. The development of medical infrastructure was also addressed. He asked the department to expedite projects approved or in progress by medical colleges.

OP Soni, Medical Education Minister, opened up about the medical colleges being started in Kapurthala, Mohali, and Hoshiarpur. He said that the medical colleges will also open at Gurdaspur and Malerkotla after approval by the Central Government.

After the approval of ICMR, New Delhi, the efforts are being put into the establishment of the National Institute of Virology. This institute is set to be located in Mohali.

He commented on the state's medical sector. He stated that there are 6 councils for the registration of nurses, doctors, and pharmacists. He also said that there are two universities under the department. He also shared the following details:-

  • 12 Nursing Schools and Colleges
  • One Government Ayurvedic College
  • 3 Government Medical College, and
  • 2 Government Dental College

He also pointed out that the new rules and regulations by various councils, namely the Central Council of Indian Medicine, NMC, and Dental Council of India. The budget has been increased to 1008 crores from 550 crores during last year. 

He also shared the government's efforts in coping up with the rise in Covid-19 cases. He shared the following details:-

  • 1498 Isolation beds were established
  • Out of them, 361 consisted of ICU beds
  • 14000 covid patients are being treated in medical college
  • The testing capacity is increased to 35 thousand tests per day
  • Arrangements are made for the dialysis patients and pregnant women
  • Plasma banks have been set up in three medical college

CM Amarinder Singh reviewed the department of education virtually. He approved necessary amendments in the system to meet the Covid-19 crisis. He will be writing a letter seeking beds from military hospitals and PGI satellite centers to PM Modi. 

There will be recruitment for 900 posts. Although 400 to he recruited at earliest during the phase 1. He also said that priority will be given to contract workers with the Punjab government while recruiting technicians.
